April 17, 2017 - June 10, 2017

Build strategic alliances with alien planets. Explore ancient civilizations with mythical creatures of your own design. Dine with Shakespeare’s villains and live to tell the tale. Meet a wacky troop of robots here to help you design sustainable cities of the future.

At Sparklelab, we design playful learning experiences for young people that capture the imagination, nurture creativity, encourage innovation and engineer delight. Come join us for workshops this summer on Game design, Toy making and Stop motion animation and film making.

Kids will learn skills such as coding, soldering or animation. More importantly they will learn to think creatively and critically. They will learn about Imagining, Experimenting, Designing, Giving and receiving feedback, about Team work and much more.

Sparklelab’s main workshops are for kids between 7 and 18 years of age. Sparklelab believes in intergenerational learning and therefore does not segregate kids in age groups. For kids younger than 7 we have a special program called Bytesize.

Gamemakers 1
April 17-22 | May 1-13 | May 15-27 | May 29 – June 10
Fundamentals of Game Design – this is a workshop on non-digital game design. Kids learn about the structure of games (e.g. narrative, objectives, rules, core mechanics etc.). With their understanding of game design they go on to modify/hack existing games and to design their own games. Exercises might for example include to design a physical version of a video game like Pacman or to design a game with certain required elements such as the core mechanics “jumping”, theme “unicorns” and component “bowling pins”. Kids learn to think critically – to understand games as a set of rules and mechanics. They learn to think creatively, work with constraints, design, give and receive feedback and to iterate on their designs.

Toy Mill 1
May 29 – June 10
A History of Toys: Be an archaelogist and discover toys from ancient Egypt and Greece. Travel to the renaissance and create a hobby horse. Witness the industrial revolution and the birth of a mass market toy industry. Play with toys. Learn about their origins. Discover how design and chance contributed to their creation. You will create all sorts of wonderful toys while traveling through time – exploring toys of the past and inventing toys of the future.

Toy Mill 2
April 17-22 | May 1- 13 | May 15-27
Mad Scientist’s lab: Create creepy cute monsters that talk. Paper animals that dance. A race car or water-powered rocket to impress your friends. Create a sweet little plush toy that acts as your night light. Or a toy soldier that plays a trumpet at first light to help you start your day. If you can dream it, we can build it!

Gamemakers 2
April 24 – 29 | May 1-13 | May 15-27 | May 29- June 10
Adventures in Scratch – builds on the understanding of game design taught in Game Makers 1. Here kids venture into the world of digital games. Kids learn to program using the programming language Scratch. Kids will learn to write the narrative of their game, design core mechanics, components and the like and then build their own video games.

The Art of Stop Motion: Develop the craft of storytelling and create beautiful stop-motion animations using Lego’s, post-its, photographs, clay or anything you dream up! Capture moments. Edit them together. Design your soundscape. Level up with special effects. Then sit back, relax and enjoy some popcorn during the evening premiere!

The Art of Stop Motion Advanced: For participants who have prior experience in stop motion animation, this workshop allows you to pursue one project in depth with the help of our animation mentors.

For 3.5-6 year olds | Mondays + Wednesdays in May
Byte Size is our program for little tinkerers, scientists, artists and engineers between 3.5 and 7 years of age. Our two-hour play groups are filled with stories, wacky design jams and lots of play. This summer, Byte Size is hosting a Circus of Delight filled with cute little animals, clowns, color and games. Listen to stories. Play dress up. Wiggle, giggle, build, paint and craft. Kids will learn about storytelling, sensory play, role-playing, tinkering, simple circuits, arts and crafts and more.

Sparklelab designs play based learning experiences mainly in the realm of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math). We do this amongst others by conducting after-school and summer workshops for kids. Our objective is to prepare kids for success in the future by teaching them critical 21st century skills such as Imagining, Research/Finding inspiration, Exploring, tinkering and experimenting, Designing, procedural thinking, Collaborating and Connecting/Sharing to name but a few.
